Did you know that the Andragogical Institute of the Lifelong Learning University in Velenje is celebrating 60 years of existence and operation this year? Quite a long time, isn’t it? Velenje’s Lifelong Learning University was founded on 20 October 1959 and is exactly as old as the city itself
It is one of the most prominent witnesses of the voluntary work and enthusiasm that enabled the creation of the urban miracle, almost building the town of Velenje overnight. At the time, the premises was one of the new buildings that were designed in a modern style and each of them, with its distinctive architectural seal, elevated a simple mining settlement to a modern urban centre that aroused curiosity throughout Yugoslavia.
The social role of the Lifelong Learning University of Velenje in this process is not negligible as it has linked immigrant miners and their families, with its programmes and content, enabling them to become a community in a city that has just become a community.
The city is a community. The city is actually just the sum of all the people living in it and the quality of living in the city highly depends on all the good things the city can offer its inhabitants.
For the last 60 years, the Andragogical Institute of the Velenje Lifelong Learning University has been fulfilling its mission, offering citizens interesting, high-quality educational programmes, building competences, relationships and intergenerational dialogue. Did you know that the Lifelong Learning University implements around 350 different programmes and projects each year, and that at least 7,000 people are educated there every year? These are really high numbers. Has the Lifelong Learning University received any recognition for its efforts and success? Of course! The Lifelong Learning University of Velenje is the only adult education institution in Europe that has received three “jabolko kakovosti” awards for international projects, as well as several other awards.
The Lifelong Learning University has played a key role in shaping our city and living in it, and today, with a diverse programme, it enables lifelong learning for all generations.
